Jonathan Weinkle, MD

Medicine-Pediatrics Resident, UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside &
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC; Continuing Medical
Education Advisor

Dr. Weinkle received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. Following two years of service as a medic in the Naval Branch of the Israel Defense Forces, he returned to Pittsburgh to attend medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He is currently completing a four-year combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. For the past two years, Dr. Weinkle has worked with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute – Center for Environmental Oncology, helping his fellow clinicians to learn the basic tenets of environmental health and include them in their medical practice. He has led an effort to expand the environmental health education for residents and faculty at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh that was recognized in October 2007 with the US Environmental Protection Agency Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Award. Currently he serves on the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh “Green Team,” and in that capacity is continuing to promote environmental health awareness and practice as a part of pediatric primary care. Dr. Weinkle will complete his residency this June and will begin primary care practice at the Squirrel Hill Health Center. He will also be continuing environmental and health policy work through the Jewish Healthcare Foundation; in this capacity he plans to work with his colleagues from the Center for Environmental Oncology to continue training local physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in environmental health.
